My Suburb: Oak Flats

Illawarra Mercury

Saturday October 4, 2008

The original 1200-acre (485ha) grant was made to John Horsley in 1821 with the land then known as the Oak Flats run.

The land then had several different owners, most of them farmers, until 1921 when it was auctioned as a subdivision - lots nine, 10 and 11 later becoming what is now known as the suburb of Oak Flats.

In 1926 lot 10 was developed into the first town subdivision called the Lake Illawarra Township Estate. The town was designed on the concept of Walter Burley Griffin's architectural work for Canberra, which was in the process of being laid out.

The development of Oak Flats took off in 1947 after World War II when the town became a source of affordable housing for immigrants.

House median price: $327,000 ( 2 per cent growth to July 2008)

Record residential sale: $950,000 (2003)

'Oak Flats has lots of good parks and our home has lake views. Oak Flats still has a country feel, good access to medical services and other services as well as Stocklands Shellharbour. We lived in Flinders before and we liked Flinders - but not as much as we like Oak Flats.'

Claire Bird, with son Curtis.
